Margo’s phone rang just as the front doorbell chimed. She answered the phone and started toward the front door when Treavor jogged from the kitchen.

“I’ve got it, Mom. Delivery guy arrived early.” Treavor swung the door open to see Chris on the other side. “Oh, it’s you.”

“Sorry to disappoint you, Treavor. Is your mom here?”

“Yeah, she’s on the phone in the dining room.”

“I brought a bag of burgers. Want to put those in the kitchen?”

“We’ve got food coming.”

“Now we’ve got more.” He lifted his chin. “Mind if I walk back?”

“Go ahead. She’s expecting you.”

Chris turned toward Treavor. “How are you doing?”

“Not worth a shit, to tell the truth.”

Chris’s lips flattened. “Don’t let your mom hear you using that language. She’ll wash your mouth out with soap.”

Treavor shrugged and turned toward the kitchen.

Chris called after him. “My offer still stands if you want to talk.”

“Yeah, my mom changed her mind. She doesn’t want me talking to you.” Treavor shrugged again. “You must have really pissed her off. She was pretty clear about that.”

“I’ll talk to her.”

“Good luck.”

Chris walked down the hall where he heard Margo’s voice. “That’s great news. Will it be all right if we come by tomorrow afternoon? We won’t stress him, just a few questions.”

Chris leaned against the doorjamb with his hands on his pockets and his ankles crossed as he watched Margo. Even with sadness in her eyes and a frown on her face, she still sounded happy. He scanned the room, focusing on the mess atop the table and the boxes scattered around the room. Margo looked at him as she disconnected the call.

He smiled. “You’ve been busy.”

“We got a lot of this yesterday and, um . . .” She swallowed as she gaged Chris’s reaction. “An envelope from Travis two days ago.”

“Pardon?”

The doorbell rang again, and she heard Treavor say, “Hey, Kyle! Mom and Agent Sheppard are in the dining room.”

“Thanks, Treav. I brought a bottle of wine for your mom, Dr. Pepper for you, and beer for Sheppard and me.”

“I guess we’re having a real feast.”

“What?”

“Food is on its way and Agent Sheppard brought burgers. They’re in the kitchen. Want one?”

“Not yet. Let me check on your mom.”

Kyle stepped behind Chris as Margo was saying, “We’ve barely looked at it, Chris. This is the first time we’ll see it laid out. In fact, if today’s events hadn’t happened, you still wouldn’t know about it because I wasn’t ready to share with you yet. I wanted to see if what he sent made any sense with the evidence we retrieved yesterday.”

Chris swung his satchel from behind his back and noticed Kyle for the first time, standing behind him with a scowl on his face. “Looks like you have more than I do.”

Kyle’s lip curled. “If we can believe that this is all you have. Somehow, I doubt it.”

Chris stepped further into the room and faced Kyle. “You don’t like me very much, Detective Morgan. Is there a reason for that?”

“Yeah, you don’t seem trustworthy.”

Margo pressed her fingers into her temple.
